The History of Chandelier Lights
The first appearance of chandelier lights appeared
in the 14th century, with designs made of wood and
candle fittings. Over time it was found that grease
ruined the wood so it was later exchanged for metal.
Iron, copper, brass and silver are still being used
now just as they did back then but with electric
or gas lighting. In the 17th century the popularity
of chandeliers grew and could be seen in homes throughout
northern Europe. Through to the 18th century, chandelier
designers created a splendor of unique and interest
designs that would still feature in modern chandelier
designs. By the 19th century, the chandelier lights
featured hanging drops and roped pendants. Over
the years the two or more light design has featured
as a domestic chandelier. In modern times, the chandelier
plays a important feature in a home with modern
ideas intertwined with the history of geometric
art.
Some interesting facts about chandelier lights:
-The word chandelier is from the French language
with the word chandelle meaning candle. It represents
a light fixture with branch supports, hangs from
the ceiling and has two or more light fixtures or
candles.
-The law of pendulum was discovered with a chandelier.
Galileo Galilei was experimenting with a swinging
chandelier and noticed the swing of the chandelier
took the same amount of time even if it was slightly
shorter each time.
-The use of crystals in the chandelier was used
originally to spread and reflect light. A crystal
glass was designed to work best with chandeliers
because of the strong, clear and reflective features
of this type of crystal.
-Electric chandeliers became popular, as they are
easier and more functional to use than traditional
candles. The styles of chandeliers have changed
over time becoming more elaborate and extravagant.
